Where do you get your news?

It’s a question I’ve been asking people a lot recently. I put out a poll on my socials last year and again this week. Both times the data came back and really surprised me.

It was certainly an imperfect study, the vast majority of people didn’t respond, and there’s nothing scientific about an Instagram poll, but the takeaway seems clear to me: Young people don’t subscribe to or trust the news. They tend to get their information from social media and are highly skewed towards turning to free outlets.

What’s more, young people are highly informed and know that we shouldn’t be trusting social media for our news. Yet, in our moments of weakness we still see that Instagram post and allow it to change how we think. Despite knowing better, we allow that small signal to influence us.

At the same time, extreme editorial bias is rampant in media. It is at the point where the editorial tone, the “gotcha” reporting, the race to the bottom is so clear that highly educated people of all ages are reporting that they don’t have places they can trust anymore. We don’t even agree on the facts, let alone on what those mean. There’s been a slow drift, tectonic plates sliding apart - it’s ripping at the fabric of our society. No longer.

We’re starting something special. We’re starting something new. We’re starting accordingto.ca

accordingto is the destination for emerging Canadian writers to get platformed. We exist as a place to share ideas and restore credibility to the media landscape.

There’s no editorial angle - no systemic bias. There’s no corporate interests putting their fingers on the scale.

We’re going to repair the discourse one opinion piece at a time. We’re doing it by focusing on young people, those who have until now been left out of the conversation. We’re turning the keys over to the next generation. We’re here to amplify the voices that acknowledge complexity, nuance, and truth.

And here's the first truth: we need your help to do it. We’re a small operation run by volunteers. We believe in our mission. If you do too, you can reward us with your clicks. The best thing to do is share - spread the word. The next best thing is to subscribe - give us the signal that we’re doing something valuable. Finally, you can tell those incredible writers you know - the people who have something to say, but haven’t found a place to say it - to get in touch and contribute.

Let’s get to work.
